Contemporary Therapies & Their Application (104 hours)

This program would focus on understanding various contemporary therapies and their application in the real-world setting. It would include a comprehensive understanding of various therapies like ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), PCIT (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy) and CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy). Novel topics like Intuitive Eating, attachment and trauma bonds and feminist therapy will also be undertaken.

Overview of topics:

  • Understanding ADHD: This program would focus on various aspects of child neurodivergence, assessments and parent counselling. Essential tenets of parent-child interaction therapy will also be addressed. The internship covers understanding ADHD in children and play therapy interventions for the same.
  • Educational Assessments: Inculcating an understanding of conducting educational assessments for children and adolescents w.r.t. reading, writing and arithmetic skills.
  • Existential therapy: It is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on helping individuals understand and come to terms with the meaning and purpose of their existence and how to find fulfilment in life.
  • Feminist therapy: This form of psychotherapy incorporates feminist principles and perspectives to understand and address the ways in which gender, race, class, and other forms of oppression may impact the mental health and well-being of individuals and groups. It is an empowering approach that helps clients to recognize, name, and challenge these forms of oppression in their lives and work towards greater autonomy, equality, and social justice.
  • QAT and KAT: Queer affirmative therapy is a therapeutic practice that takes a positive view of Lesbian, Gay, Transgender and Queer persons, their identities, and their relationships. It also addresses the impact of homophobia, transphobia and heteronormativity on LGBT clients. Kink affirmative therapy entails not only a no-judgement zone but also therapists who genuinely understand identity issues and sexual practices. Kinks are one way to explore identity and sexuality for both queer and cis-het people.
  • Introduction to Neuropsychology: Introduction to neuroanatomy. Introduction to basics of neuropsychology. We will cover systematic investigation into brain-behaviour relationships and their applications in clinical practice.
  • Attachment and Trauma bonds: This will center on people’s different attachment styles. Emotional attachment generally paves the way for trauma bonds. The notion of power will be emphasised in relationships.
  • Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy focusing on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. CBT aims to help individuals identify and change negative patterns of thinking and behaviour to improve mood and reduce symptoms of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. CBT typically involves a structured, goal-oriented approach and may include elements of exposure therapy, problem-solving, and relaxation techniques. It is widely used as a treatment for various mental health conditions and is effective in multiple studies.
  • Physical Fitness and Mental Wellbeing: Physical fitness and mental well-being are closely linked. Regular physical activity has been shown to impact mental health positively and can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Exercise can release endorphins, chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers and mood elevators. Regular physical activity can improve sleep, increase self-esteem, and reduce stress.
  • Intuitive eating: Intuitive eating is a non-diet approach to nutrition that emphasizes listening to your body’s natural hunger and fullness cues to guide your food choices. It encourages people to eat when hungry and stop when they are full rather than following restrictive diet plans or food rules. Intuitive eating aims to develop a positive relationship with food and your body rather than focusing on weight loss or control. It also encourages people to eat various foods and enjoy meals without guilt or shame.
