Internship & Training in Counselling & Clinical Psychology (40 hours)

Workshop Description

This internship delves into essential counselling and clinical psychology principles through interactive sessions featuring roleplays and case studies. Our goal is to equip students with the foundational skills crucial for any therapist’s practice. The internship will focus on honing therapy techniques, providing a comprehensive introduction to the path of becoming a psychotherapist while delving into a range of mental health issues and disorders. The internship will be covering areas such as ethics, cultural sensitivity, intersectionality, non-suicidal self-injury, couple counseling, and diverse therapeutic methodologies. Led by our team of counselling and clinical psychologists, participants will gain valuable insights into these subjects through a variety of specialized therapy techniques and perspectives.

Topics Covered

1. Mood Disorders:

Mood disorders refer to a group of mental health conditions characterised by significant changes in a person’s mood, energy, and level of activity. These changes can be long-lasting and can cause significant impairment in a person’s ability to function in their daily life. Major mood disorders that we will cover are Major depressive disorder, Bipolar disorder, and Mania.

2. Affirmative Counselling for Queer Clients

Provide a space uniquely theirs for queer clients through affirmative counselling approaches that fully embrace diverse identities/expressions and orientations. Our interactive seminar teaches essential knowledge, tools, and mindsets practitioners require along with psychoeducation about gender and sexuality.

3. Understanding Your Own Biases and Discrimination:

Examine personal prejudices and how to mitigate them through reflective practices for more ethical therapeutic work. This session will provide frameworks for identifying biases as well as strategies to counteract them.

4. Narrative Therapy:

Narratives that are constitutive of people’s lives, their identities, and their problems are what occupy the centre stage in narrative therapy. Narrative Therapy applies to several concerns and mental illnesses: childhood disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia, depression, marital conflicts, grief, bullying, and more. It looks at clients through the stories of their lives and believes that clients are the experts in the session.

5. Trauma-Informed lens

This session will focus on the importance of being trauma-informed in counseling practice. Students will gain an understanding of how challenging and traumatic circumstances can impact individuals and their mental health. The session will include a case study and discussion to illustrate the practical applications of a trauma-informed approach.
