Internship & Training in Counselling Psychology (60 Hours)

This comprehensive training-based internship aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills required in the field of Counselling Psychology. The program is structured to help students become competent therapists as the course provides students with an opportunity to enhance their understanding of counselling and the therapeutic process. Each week the course will delve into a different theme and central idea that will give students a platform to equip themselves with core competencies to be effective and ethical practitioners. Case studies, Case discussions, and role plays will be carried out, based on the topic that will be covered during the internship.

Topics Covered

  1. Counseling Skills Training: A foundational understanding of micro-skills is essential for every practitioner, covering how we speak, what we say, and how we conduct ourselves, including body language and eye contact.
  2. Self-Harm and Suicide: This theme delves into the nuanced aspect of working with clients dealing with self-harm and suicidal ideations. The classes offer not only foundational theories but also a specialized focus on risk assessment. Understanding the signs, exploring coping mechanisms, and developing intervention strategies are key components. The aim is to equip practitioners with the skills to navigate these challenging situations, ensuring the safety and well-being of their clients.
  3. Personality Disorders: Various types of personality disorders encompassing cluster A, B and C. The intricacies involved with the disorder will be explored and its management and interventions.
  4. Queer Affirmative Therapy: In line with Karma Centre’s values, this theme champions a Queer Affirmative Therapy lens. The classes engage in an in-depth discussion on gender and sexuality, fostering a queer-affirmative perspective in therapeutic practice. The emphasis is on creating a safe and supportive space for individuals in the queer community. The goal is to empower practitioners with the knowledge and skills to be allies, ensuring inclusivity and respect in therapeutic interactions
  5. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): This is an empirically validated therapy effective for clients struggling with emotional dysregulation linked to conditions like borderline personality disorder. By targeting acceptance, mindfulness techniques, and concrete skills for managing intense emotions that overwhelm one’s coping abilities, DBT can greatly reduce client distress. This session provides full exposure to DBT principles and hands-on implementation.
