Schools are often the first spaces where emotional, behavioural, and developmental concerns become visible. This 3-day workshop is designed for psychology students, early-career mental health professionals, and individuals interested in school counselling who want to build foundational skills in working with children and adolescents. It introduces students to child counselling processes, school mental health frameworks, and practical & ethical ways of supporting young people in educational settings.
The workshop focuses on understanding children’s emotional worlds and how to respond to common concerns they may have. Students will explore child developmental concerns, the role of a school counsellor, and how these concerns present within school environments, along with ways to respond in supportive and context-sensitive ways. Students will also be trained to effectively mediate and navigate the parent–school–teacher trifecta, while consistently prioritizing the student’s well-being.
Through interactive learning, students will develop skills in building rapport with children using developmentally appropriate approaches, including play-based communication and active listening. The workshop also covers working collaboratively with parents and teachers, alongside understanding ethical responsibilities such as confidentiality, consent, and safeguarding when working with minors.
