Workshop on Counselling Skills Training

This workshop provides students with a comprehensive opportunity to deepen their understanding of fundamental counseling microskills while simultaneously equipping them with the practical tools needed for applied counseling practice. Through interactive sessions, participants will not only enhance their theoretical knowledge but also engage in hands-on activities designed to develop and refine their ability to work effectively in real-world counseling scenarios. The workshop aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring participants leave with a strong foundation in essential counseling techniques and the confidence to apply them in diverse contexts.

Topics Covered

• Skills and Techniques in counselling Psychology – Having a foundational understanding of the micro skills involved in therapy are necessary for every practitioner. These skills and techniques will help budding psychologists structure and plan their sessions. These classes will focus on role plays and giving each student a chance to enhance their therapeutic skills. 
• Case History and MSE: We will learn about clinical case history taking. Case history is an initial interview which is taken of the patient that helps the clinician move forward with the treatment plan.  Along with this, we will learn about MSE. A mental status exam (MSE) is done by healthcare professionals to evaluate a patient’s current mental state. The MSE is a structured evaluation that includes a comprehensive assessment of a patient’s psychological functioning, including their cognition, mood, behaviour, and affect. 
• Self harm, suicide and risk Assessment – This theme will focus on how one can work with clients who self harm and have suicidal ideations/wishes. The sessions will consist of a foundational theory focusing especially on risk assessment with such clients followed by case discussions. 
• Affirmative Counselling for Queer Clients: Provide a space uniquely theirs for queer clients through affirmative counseling approaches that fully embrace diverse identities/expressions and orientations. Our interactive seminar teaches essential knowledge, tools, and mindsets practitioners require along with psychoeducation about gender and sexuality.
